What is proof checking, and why do infrastructure projects need it?

A proof checking consultant is an independent structural engineer who reviews another firm’s design before it is built, to confirm that it is safe, follows the applicable design codes and matches the project requirements. On public infrastructure in India, such as road over bridges, flyovers, metro structures and station buildings, the client or authority usually appoints a proof checker so that no design reaches site on the strength of a single engineer’s work.

Why do infrastructure projects need proof checking?

Bridges, metro viaducts and station structures carry large numbers of people, and a design error can be costly or dangerous to correct once concrete is poured. An independent check catches mistakes in loads, analysis, detailing or drawings while they are still easy to fix. It also gives the owner, often a public authority, documented assurance that the design has been verified by a second qualified engineer.

What does a proof checker actually check?

The checker records observations, the designer responds or revises, and the cycle repeats until the design is cleared for construction.

How is proof checking different from design review and third-party verification?

RoleWhat it involvesTypical example
Proof checkingIndependent check of a complete design and drawings before constructionProof Checking Consultant for a road over bridge
Design review and supportReviewing a designer’s submissions and supporting the contractor or client to make them construction-readyDesign review for an underground station
Lead Design CheckerCoordinated checking of structural, civil, architectural and MEP design across a large packageMetro line design checking for the authority
Third-party verification (3PV)Independent verification of designs on behalf of the employer, often across many structuresDepots and traction substations on a high-speed rail package

Who appoints the proof checker?

Usually the project owner or authority, such as a state Public Works Department, a municipal corporation, a metro or rail corporation, or the contractor under the terms of the contract. The proof checker must be independent of the designer whose work is being checked.
